Ideas talk: In pursuit of success
18 March 2009
In July 2012, the greatest sporting event in the world will be staged on our region’s doorstep. London 2012 will present up to 75,000 contract opportunities worth approximately £6 billion, we want to encourage regional businesses to compete for a share.
On 18 March 2009 EEDA hosted the eighth in the popular series of ideas talks. In pursuit of success focused on the business opportunities that the London 2012 games will create. The event featured an inspirational keynote speech from a British Olympic gold medallist, and we were joined by John Armitt, chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority and Stephen Castle, Nations and Regions East.
The keynote speech was provided by Chris Boardman MBE, Olympic champion and director of coaching for the Team GB cyclists at Beijing. Chris took Gold in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, has won three World Championship titles and, in 1994, took on cycling’s greatest challenge – the Tour de France. Aside from his recent success as part of the Beijing cycling team's coaching staff, Chris has also set up his own business – Boardman Bikes – which has gone from start-up to a turnover in excess of £15 million in just two years.
