What is Cut your Carbon?
Cut your Carbon is a campaign that offers support and information to communities in the East of England that want to tackle climate change.
Historically, Cut your Carbon has run a funding competition that offered money to community groups for innovative carbon-cutting projects. To read about these projects, please visit www.cutyourcarbon.org.uk.
The website offers a one of a kind community carbon footprint calculator which enables groups taking part to measure their carbon footprint, become more energy efficient, and work together as a community to reduce their carbon footprint.
The community carbon calculator
One of the key innovations of the campaign is an online community carbon footprint calculator. It provides the first step in helping groups understand how much carbon dioxide they produce and what they can do to reduce it.
Communities can work out a collective carbon footprint by getting individuals in the community to calculate the emissions from their heating system; appliances and electronic devices; and personal transport (including flights). Details of the energy usage of local businesses and community buildings, such as village halls can also be included to give a complete picture.
The calculator uses data from the Energy Saving Trust to suggest simple things people can do to make a difference, and there are social networking tools to help people communicate and learn from each other online.
