Information
One of the key areas of recommendations in the 2005 research report was migrant workers' access to information.
There have been many welcome packs developed across the UK, several of them within the East of England. Although good practice on such information packs has been developed, there is still a lot of duplication of effort in the production of those.
EEDA funded the transnational Meeting the Information Needs of Economic Migrants (MINEM) project as part of its response to the research recommendations. Alongside this, funding was also provided for a regional pilot information portal that became the Migrant Gateway.
National Information Portal
Building on the success of these projects, EEDA has now completed the procurement of the National Information Portal for Migrant Workers project. The contract has been awarded to HTK Ltd of Ipswich in Suffolk who will lead a consortium of specialist organisations with expertise in web design and development, marketing and migrant worker issues.
The project has funding for a period of three years with support from the European Social Fund and Department for Communities and Local Government. The project will provide information about living and working in the UK, such as housing, employment rights, access to public services and rights to live and work in the UK.
One of the main objectives is to ensure that there is good quality and up to date information available to migrant workers, employers and service providers through a single portal. Expressions of interest in investing in the project have been received from other areas of the UK and the intention is to add features and functionality as additional funding becomes available.
The new website, www.myukinfo.com, was launched on 11 June 2009 and there are now opportunities for other organisations to link to the main website. For more information about the project please contact migrantworkers@eeda.org.uk or info@myukinfo.com
