ERDF Venture Capital Fund
One of the key projects underway with funding through the 2007-13 ERDF Competitiveness Programme in the East of England is a regional Low Carbon Venture Capital Fund of around £20 million. The fund has been developed with £8 million of ERDF funds and is now open for applications.
The Low Carbon Innovation Fund will invest alongside private investors, and is seeking to support around 35-40 SMEs in the East of England - with provision for follow-on investments. Whilst predominately seeking to support early stage business opportunities, the Fund offers some scope for more established and start-up ventures. Investment sizes will range from £50,000 to £500,000.
Successful investees will need to demonstrate that they will utilise the investment in accordance with the thematic focus of the ERDF programme, 'towards low carbon economic growth'. To this end, SMEs will need to be within low carbon or cleantech sectors; be developing new environmentally friendly products for market; be proposing different processes to improve resource efficiency and reduce their carbon impact; or supplying services to such sectors.
The chosen fund operator for this project is the Low Carbon Innovation Centre at the University of East Anglia, who are working with Turquoise International as fund manager.
