Essential evidence to plan for employment growth
23 November 2009
Essential evidence on how the region will deliver the strategic employment sites to accommodate future growth sectors is published today.
Commissioned by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) from Arup, the East of England Strategic Employment Sites Study investigates economic markets and sectors in the East of England.
The study identifies a range of existing and planned strategic employment sites in the region and sets out a new approach to the future definition, prioritisation and delivery of such sites. The approach is based on an understanding of likely future demand, including potential locations where new sites might be needed.
The study also provides an activity plan that includes individual site actions. This will ensure that the successful delivery of strategic employment sites enhance the overall competitive position of the sites for development and investment.
Andy Fisher, principal planning executive at EEDA, said:
“This study provides much-needed evidence on how the region is placed in terms of delivering the strategic employment sites that will be able to accommodate future growth sectors, such as advanced engineering, computer services and ICT, environment technologies and life sciences.
“This is an essential piece of work to ensure the delivery of a range of employment opportunities across the region of the quality and quantity required to meet the needs of business. This will be crucial to help local partners in the region to meet their aspirations for growth.
“It is important to ensure that the East of England is in the best possible position as the economy recovers. The approach to the key strategic employment opportunities in the region is expected to be particularly significant to achieve this.
“The results of this work will now be used to promote the region as a place to invest for business and to help regional partners such as local authorities, businesses and local delivery vehicles to maximise the potential value of these strategic employment opportunities.”
Chris Tunnel, project director at Arup, who completed the study said:
“The East of England has high economic growth targets as set out in the Regional Economic Strategy (RES) and reflected in the East of England Plan. This study considers the role of strategic employment sites in meeting these targets and maximising the potential benefits of this growth.
“The identification of strategic employment sites is an important exercise, to ensure that these sites can be promoted and protected from other development pressures, in particular housing, once the economy recovers.
“The study will inform future policy and interventions to ensure the delivery of these strategic sites to meet the needs of business, economic markets and sectors.”
