Creating futures: Investing in the East of England

20 October 2010

Creating futures is a celebration of the fantastic achievements of the initiatives made possible by the European Social Fund and the European Regional Development Fund in the East of England.

The Creating Futures Awards are EEDA’s opportunity to look back and acknowledge some of the fantastic achievements, initiatives and projects, which have been made possible thanks to European funding. These awards celebrate the successes of the people, businesses and communities that have benefited from the European Social Fund and the European Regional Development Fund.

The Creating Futures Awards were hosted by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), which is responsible for delivery of the ERDF competitiveness programme, the East of England Local Government  association (EELGA) and the Government Office for the East of England (GO-East) which is responsible for delivery of the regional element of the national ESF programme in the East of England.

Presented by Lucy Siegle, journalist, author and presenter in ecological and ethical lifestyle matters, the awards recognised achievements in the following categories:

  • Low carbon innovation
  • Environmental excellence
  • Skills for life
  • Community impact
  • Personal Transformation
  • Sharing best practice

In 2007, another seven-year programme period for the European Structural Funds began. Structural funds are the main way in which the European Union (EU) supports social and economic restructuring for its members. The previous funding period resulted in more than £300 million distributed throughout the East of England from 2000 to the end of 2008. The new programmes are funding initiatives that will make fundamental differences to those living and working in the East of England.

Details of short listed and winning projects can be seen below, along with a video account and photographs from the day. Visit EEDA's blog to hear more from David Morrall, director- Europe and International, on his thoughts on the day and the importance of European funding for the East of England.
