Underlying principles
Every aspect of EEDA's work - from delivering its regional programmes, to maintaining its offices - is supported by two fundamental principles:
Sustainable development
EEDA's corporate plan recognises the following five principles for sustainable development:
- living within environmental limits
- ensuring a strong, healthy and just society
- achieving a sustainable economy
- promoting good governance
- using science responsibly.
EEDA embeds these principles in everything it does in the following ways:
- decisions regarding sustainable development and investment priorities will be based on evidence from thorough research
- regional strategies will be developed using an approach that prioritises sustainability
- investments will meet challenging design and environmental standards
- using independent approaches will be used to test and find ways to improve the sustainability of projects.
EEDA aims to become carbon neutral by 2010 through:
- refitting its buildings to reduce energy use and waste
- implementing a plan to reduce carbon emissions from employee travel
- reviewing the environmental impact of EEDA's work and developing policies and procedures to improve energy efficiency
- maintaining environmental management in line with our ISO 4001 accreditation.
Equal access to economic opportunities
EEDA is dedicated to equal opportunities. To achieve this we will:
- establish a plan for delivering equality across all programmes by 2011
- review equality across all EEDA strategies, policies, programmes and projects
- train employees and partners in how to achieve equality and diversity
- compare EEDA against similar organisations to identify ways to improve equality
- build on our achievement of securing C2E national accreditation for our equality policies
- increase the diversity of approved EEDA suppliers
- undertake more primary research into regional and local equality with the Office of National Statistics
- work with Business Link to promote the business case for equality in the workplace.
