EEDA's enterprise hub for Offshore Renewables

The landmark building in Ness Point, Lowestoft is an enterprise hub for businesses involved in the renewable energy sector.
OrbisEnergy is part of EEDA's commitment to the environment and renewable energy. The energy efficient, landmark building is key in enabling the East of England to capitalise on its vast natural energy resources and assist the region's businesses to sieze new opportunities in this sector.
It has been designed to be a showcase for sustainable development with solar thermal heating and the installation of a biomass boiler and will provide a physical focus to showcase the region's strengths in offshore renewable technology. OrbisEnergy also aims to maximise the supply chain opportunities associated with the rapid development of offshore renewables in the North Sea, which for offshore wind is emerging as the international proving ground for large-scale offshore wind farms.
After just ten months OrbisEnergy is already 40 per cent full. Scottish and Southern Energy is an anchor tenant through Greater Gabbard Offshore Winds Ltd.
Facts and figures
- it is expected to provide employment opportunities for up to 150 people
- it will provide high quality, flexible office accommodation for up to 30 companies including an area for holding exhibitions and small conferences
- there will be internal networking space to promote knowledge sharing between companies and universities, including University Campus Suffolk
- it has been built using some of the environmental techniques to achieve a high Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) rating.
Funding
- OrbisEnergy represents a £9.4 million investment
- awarded over £6.3 million by EEDA
- awarded over £2.7 million Objective 2 ERDF (through GO-East) 2000-06
- awarded £250,000 by Waveney District Council
- awarded £100,000 by Suffolk County Council.
