About Investing in Communities
Through the Investing in Communities programme, EEDA is committed to ensuring that everyone across the East of England has the opportunity to participate fully in the region's economy. Enabling everyone to participate is essential for the continued growth and development of our economy - harnessing the untapped time, skills and creativity of our population to ensure that we remain one of the UK's top performing regions.
Overcoming the barriers to participation
While the East of England enjoys relative economic success, there are still many people who find it difficult to access employment or start their own business. For some, this could be due to a lack of appropriate skills or confidence. In some cases there isn't the right, tailored support available, or the support is too hard to access. Other people may have long-term health issues that prevent them from working, while at times it's the attitudes or practices of employers that prevent capable people from finding work.
To overcome these barriers, EEDA is focusing on three priorities:
- raising skill levels
- removing barriers to employment
- stimulating enterprise
Areas of activity
These three priorities are worked out at two different levels:
At a regional level, EEDA gathers evidence on economic participation issues across the region to support its own work and inform policy development and service delivery in the region. It also runs a number of regional programmes, including a focus on migrant workers, the Building Communities Fund, and support for Community Development Finance. At a local level, EEDA's strategic experience of economic development is combined with the detailed knowledge of local decision-makers. Over 2007-12, EEDA is delegating at least £101 million of funding to local partners who identify the local needs and direct EEDA's investments to achieve an agreed set of targets on indicators for economic participation.
