The Business opportunities of climate change

Keynote speaker: Eddie Hyams, Chairman of the Energy Saving Trust

Panel speakers: Hugh-Peter Kelly, Trident Energy and Simon Anderson, Green Energy Options

Businesses that do not address climate change now risk losing out on the benefits and will struggle in the future.  Eddie Hyams, Chairman of the Energy Savings Trust was joined by Hugh-Peter Kelly of Trident Energy Ltd and Simon Anderson of Green Energy Options Ltd.

The discussion talked about the reliance of the UK on energy from the Middle East and the concerns of continually rising energy prices.  There are plenty of opportunities for entrepreneurial businesses to grasp as the technologies to help businesses and consumers address their impact on climate change exist already.  In a climate of ever increasing energy prices, businesses need to differentiate themselves from the competition in terms of their energy usage.

Hugh-Peter Kelly presented the simple concept behind the unique method of generating electricity by using floats in the sea to capture the energy from waves.  Trident Energy has generated sufficient interest in their product that trials are being run, although it did require a degree of persistence in order to get both private and public sector funding for the venture.

Simon Anderson of Green Energy Options talked about the importance of getting consumer and business buy in to buying and using energy saving products.  He explained that the big challenge is making energy usage visible.  This is something Green Energy Options is working to do so that all consumers can understand how they manage their energy consumption and be provided with the means to cut their own carbon emissions.
