BizFizz

Bizz Fizz"Now my business is really fizzing!"

Dick Herron runs DH Fabrications, a Norwich-based steel fabrication company. Although the company is small, Dick has clear plans to grow the business. “I wanted to increase turnover and build the client base, but before I could do that I really needed to move the company to new premises and get some sound business advice and support.” With this in mind, Dick turned to BizFizz, the innovative entrepreneurs programme from the New Economics Foundation and the Civic Trust.

BizFizz supports start-up, micro and small enterprises in areas experiencing economic disadvantage. By removing barriers facing potential entrepreneurs it aims to drive local economic renewal. With the backing of Norwich City Council and EEDA, a BizFizz branch was established in 2004 in the Bowthorpe area of Norwich, just down the road from DH Fabrications.

Anne Francis is the BizFizz business coach for west Norwich and explains how it works: “I coach individuals, and help them break down barriers to enterprise. These might be internal, like a lack of self confidence or a skills gap, or external, such as a need for new premises or equipment. I work in collaboration with a panel of 30 leaders from business, the community and the media, who find solutions to help my clients achieve their targets.”

For Dick, Ann’s shrewd advice and support has made a big difference, helping him to move into new industrial premises and source essential equipment to move the business ahead. The success of Bowthorpe BizFizz earned it top prize in the East of England section of the Enterprising Britain 2006 Competition, and it narrowly missed out in the national finals.
